When spooky season rolls around, the shops are full of vaguely scary-themed treats and snacks – but you can make many of these yourself, and it’s generally not difficult to do so! Plus it can be a fun way to bond with your flatmates, who you’re most likely still getting to know so soon after the start of term. Here are some of our favourite spooky treats…
Spider cookies
You’ll need:
- A pack of cookies
- A pack of Rolos
- Black writing icing
- Small candy eyeballs
This one is super easy! If you have a flair for baking you can make the cookies yourself, but shop-bought ones will work just as well. Use the tube of writing icing to stick a Rolo or similarly shaped chocolate (like a small Reese’s cup) on top of the cookie, then pipe on some legs. You can then use some more of the icing to stick two eyes to the front of the chocolate, and voila! Spider cookies.
Rice Krispies monsters
You’ll need:
- Rice Krispies Squares Bars (or a homemade version, made by melting butter and marshmallows together and mixing with Rice Krispies)
- Icing sugar
- Water
- Food colouring
- Large candy eyeballs
Whether you’re using homemade or shop bought Rice Krispies treats, this one is super easy to do. Mix your icing sugar and water, then add some food colouring to create batches of different coloured icing – purple and green tend to work well for this. Dip each treat into icing, so it’s half covered and half not, then stick a fancy eyeball in the middle of the iced section. You could also use writing icing to pipe on a mouth, scars, bruising or anything else if you wanted to!
Spooky strawberries
You’ll need:
- Strawberries
- White chocolate
- Black writing icing
- Orange food colouring
If you can get your hands on ‘candy melts’, these are perfect for this type of spooky season treat as they tend to be easier to work with than chocolate itself. They look like coloured chocolate buttons, and you’d want both white and orange for this DIY.
If not, simply melt your white chocolate and add some orange food colouring (gel colouring works best) to half of the mixture. Then dip your strawberries, half of them in white and half of them in orange, and leave to dry. When the chocolate has solidified, use the black writing icing to pipe pumpkin carvings on the orange ones – think triangular eyes and a crooked mouth. For the white strawberries, you can do two eyes and a spooky mouth to make ghosts.
These are just three super easy spooky treats you can make for you and your flatmates as we creep closer to Halloween – using ingredients that are easily accessible in supermarkets. They’ll look great and more importantly, taste delicious…
