Moving into student accommodation is, for many, the first foray into living independently and away from “home”. It can feel overwhelming and scary, but also very exciting. And it should be a time of excitement! After all, this could be when you meet lifelong friends – here’s why…
You’re in the same boat
When you move into student accommodation, especially in your first year, it’s completely normal to be nervous and you won’t be the only one! Your flatmates are going through the exact same experience, one which is hugely life-changing and brand new to everyone. This means you instantly have something to bond over, and at least one thing in common. Take this chance to reassure each other and get to know one another!
You’re in close quarters
Our fresh and modern student accommodation in Hereford and Gloucester is spacious, and you’ll have your own room – but you’ll still be sharing a kitchen and a common area. This means there is plenty of time to interact with your flatmates, whether it’s while you’re cooking and eating, while you’re watching TV or even during study sessions. You’ll appreciate your own space, but your flatmates will be very close by and you’ll be living together all year. This means you’ll get to know each other very well.
These shared spaces really encourage social interaction, and you should take advantage of this to plan nights in together, help each other with studying, share the load when it comes to cooking and cleaning, and so on.
You’re sharing ‘firsts’
Aside from this being your first time living away from home, there are plenty of other ‘firsts’ you and your flatmates will experience together. It could be your first time ever cooking for yourself properly, doing your own laundry, budgeting and of course navigating the demands of university. These shared experiences will create strong emotional bonds, which is why your flatmates could become really good lifelong friends.
They’ll see you at your best AND your worst
While living with someone, they’re going to see you at your very best – on a high from getting a great grade, excited for a night out, feeling really good about the way you look etc. But they’ll also see you at your worst! And that’s totally okay; whether you’re unwell, homesick, struggling with some negative feedback on your latest assignment… your flatmates will see it all, and you’ll see the same from them too. This will really help to strengthen the bonds you build, as you support each other through the lows and celebrate the highs together.
Leaving your family home and moving into student accommodation is a big milestone, but it can be the turning point to finding new, lifelong friendships which will see you through university, your career and everything else life has to offer.
