As summer approaches, exams are over and the weather is (sort of) getting better, it might be time to start thinking about the big move – out of your family home and into student accommodation! This is a big transition, and one that hopefully feels super exciting. We wanted to share the first things you should do when moving into student accommodation, to set yourself up for success in your new abode…
Take an inventory
When you move into your room, write down a list of everything in there as well as any marks, stains or damage anywhere. Hopefully there won’t be any issues, but it helps to make a note of everything to protect your deposit when you move out. This means you can keep track of everything, especially if you’re planning on moving anything around or adding any new furniture.
Unpack your essentials
First things first – get out everything you need for your first day and night in your student accommodation. This means pyjamas, skincare, toothbrush & toothpaste, your chargers and some clothes for the next day. Once the basics are unpacked, then you can make a start on getting to know your new home and the nearby area!
Say hello to your neighbours
If you’ve not already, this is *the* time to introduce yourself to your fellow flatmates! Everybody will be feeling a little bit nervous, as it’s everyone’s first day in a new place – be open to conversation, ask people what they’re studying or where they’re from, and hopefully make fast friends with the people you’re sharing a kitchen and living room with…
Get familiar with your new home
You will most likely have visited your student accommodation during an open day, but there’s nothing like moving in to give you the opportunity to get to know the place! Find out where your post will be delivered, where the bins and recycling go, where you can store your bike and do your laundry and so on. It’s helpful to locate all of these on your first day (or at least within the first couple of days) so that you’re not scrambling for the information a week later with an overflowing washing basket.
Do all your practical bits and bobs
Log on to the wifi, so you know it works and you have the correct password set up. Make a note of any numbers you need, like maintenance or who to contact if you get locked out, and keep these in your phone. Then go and do a food shop – get the basics in first, like pasta, bread, butter, seasonings, milk, cleaning products, tea and so on. You don’t need to spend a lot, but again this just ensures you have what you need for the first few days.
Moving into student accommodation is a huge milestone – signalling the time in your life when you move on from school to college or university, in a new city, away from your family and friends. It’s a big step for your independence, and your new home will be somewhere you make so many memories!
