Cleaning is a great habit to get into when you move into student accommodation; it’s something you should do regularly to keep your space tidy, hygienic and liveable. Some areas and items will need cleaning more often than others, so hopefully we can help you come up with a bit of a schedule to stick to…
What to clean daily or every few days
There are some cleaning jobs in your student accommodation which need to be done every day, and some which can be done every few days. Dishes, for example, should be done daily – especially when you’re sharing a kitchen with multiple other people. There will be a lot of plates, cutlery and cooking essentials being used, and keeping on top of cleaning yours means a clear space for everyone to enjoy. Wiping down cooking and eating surfaces should be a daily job, too! It goes without saying that rubbish should go straight in the bin, too…
Every few days you should also give the kitchen and bathroom sinks a good clean, declutter surfaces, and air out spaces by opening windows.
What to clean weekly in your student accommodation
There are other cleaning tasks that you should be doing each week to keep your student accommodation spick and span. Most take less than a few minutes, and will make your space much more enjoyable to live in.
- Vacuum and mop the floors
- Empty the bins
- Clean your hob and inside of the microwave
- Check fridges for expired food and throw away
- Clean the toilet and the shower
- Change and wash your bedding
- Wipe any tables, your desk and other frequently used surfaces
Monthly cleaning tasks
By keeping on top of your daily and weekly cleaning jobs, you really minimise the time it takes to do a deep clean – there are jobs that only really need to be done every month, and while they might take a bit more time than others, they’re well worth it.
Deep cleaning inside of the fridge and the oven, for example, is a good one to tick off each month – take it in turns with your flatmates, as you all use them! Other cleaning tasks that you can (and should) do each month include dusting the skirting boards, checking cupboards for expired food, washing any blankets or throws, vacuuming your mattress and sanitising touch points like door handles and light switches.
With jobs in shared spaces, it’s helpful to discuss with your flatmates who will do them and when – maybe you’d prefer to each take a job and do it as needed, or you might choose to make a rota where your weekly and monthly jobs change. Whatever you decide on, it’s important that everybody sticks to it and respects these areas.
