In recent years, we’re starting to see fewer firework displays across Bonfire Night and the surrounding evenings. This is for many reasons such as local council budget cuts, environmental concerns, animal welfare and more. But you can certainly still celebrate Bonfire Night without the fireworks – and we’re here to share how!
Make some themed food with your flatmates
There are quite a few Bonfire Night themed treats you can make and enjoy with your flatmates to get in the spirit of things while staying cosy and warm in your student accommodation. Some of these include:
- Jacket potatoes – these are a classic Bonfire Night treat, and you can top them with whatever takes your fancy
- Toffee apples – just be very careful when making the caramel
- S’mores – more of a traditional American treat, but very yummy and easy to make
- Hot dogs – another food very often found at Bonfire Night displays, and one that’s so easy to replicate at home
- Hot chocolate – again, you can top it with whatever you fancy whether that’s whipped cream, sprinkles, marshmallows or sweets
Bonfire cupcake challenge
Another fantastic sweet treat is a bonfire cupcake – typically a chocolate cupcake, decorated with orange/yellow icing and small chocolate sticks. Grab a cheap pack of cupcakes and a tub of buttercream icing, some food colouring and some other decorative bits, then see who can make the best looking cupcake!
Bonfire Night quiz
Make your cosy night in even more fun with a Bonfire Night quiz – one person from your flat can be the host, and the rest of you can try to answer all of the questions. Theme the questions around Guy Fawkes, autumn-related general knowledge, British history and more. Maybe the prize could be skipping their turn to take the bins out…
Other ways to watch fireworks
An organised firework display isn’t the only way to watch fireworks. If you really do want to soak up the Bonfire Night atmosphere with sparkly colours in the sky, you can still do so. Wrap up warm and go for a walk around any of the residential areas near your student accommodation, and you’ll be sure to spot some fireworks lighting up the sky. And if you’d rather stay in your pyjamas with the aforementioned hot chocolate and cupcakes, why not find a pre-recorded firework display on YouTube and enjoy it from the comfort of your flat?
Bonfire Night feels like less of a big deal, especially when you’re a student, but it’s still a nice thing to celebrate and a great way to get into the spirit of autumn/winter.
